Karol (Polish), who runs a hair salon, marries Domininque (French) and moves to Paris. The marriage breaks down and Dominique divorces Karol because he is unable to consummate the marriage. He loses all of his earthly possessions and is literally driven out of France by his estranged wife. Impoverished and broken, he eventually back to Poland in a suitcase. He never forgets Dominique and while building a new, prosperous life for himself in Warsaw, he begins to plot a cleverly cruel revenge, out of desperate love for her...
This film explores the universal notion of equality, which is explored through destructive dynamics of a relationship based upon great human injustice. Kieslowski creates a very voyeuristic feel in the movie full of symbolism that depicts the very human predicaments of equality and love.

Według Krzysztofa Kieślowskiego to "Opowiadanie o równości rozumianej jako zaprzeczenie". Nikt naprawdę nie chce być równy. Każdy chce być równiejszy. Gorzka komedia, pełna zdarzeń i niespodziewanych zwrotów akcji.
Karol – świetny Zbigniew Zamachowski - to polski fryzjer mieszkający we Francji. W jego małżeństwie z Francuzką (Julie Delpy) nie układa się. Są mężczyźni, którzy "mogą", i tacy, którzy, jak fryzjer Karol, niestety "nie mogą"… I jest to powód dla pięknej Francuzki, by się rozwieść. Na sali sądowej brzmi płomienna mowa obronna (oczywiście o równości), ale - nie robi ona na sądzie wielkiego wrażenia. Karol staje się "jeszcze mniej równy" - bez pieniędzy, bez mieszkania i samochodu, w obcym kraju, bez większych szans na powrót do Polski. W metrze poznaje innego Polaka, Mikołaja (Janusz Gajos), zdesperowanego intelektualistę, który nie widzi sensu dalszego życia. Mikołaj pomaga nieszczęsnemu fryzjerowi wrócić do kraju w dość nietypowy sposób, bo … w walizce podróżnej. Karol postanawia zbić majątek, by udowodnić Dominique, że jest jej wart. A jednocześnie chce się na niej zemścić, bo kocha ją równie silnie, jak nienawidzi…
